There is a lot of content out there explaining what evidential mediumship is in theory. What you find less of is someone explaining what it actually looks like while it is happening — including the parts where the medium has absolutely no idea what they are receiving, the parts where the symbol never gets solved, and the parts where the medium does not even remember the reading afterward because it was not for them.
This is that explanation. How I receive information is specific to me — this is not a universal description of how mediumship works.
What Makes Mediumship Evidential?
In evidential mediumship, the communication from Spirit is evaluated by whether it contains information the medium could not have reasonably known, guessed, or inferred from what the sitter has said or shown.
The more specific and verifiable the information, the stronger the evidence. The goal is to establish clearly enough who is communicating that the sitter can say — that is my person, there is no reasonable way she could be talking about someone else. Once that identity is established, the message can come through. Evidence and message are two different jobs.
Every Medium Receives Differently
Evidential describes the standard the information has to meet — not one correct delivery method. Some mediums can pull names, addresses, dates, phone numbers. Others receive the full story in a coherent narrative. Every medium is different.
My strongest clair is clairsentience — physical and emotional feeling, sometimes intensely enough that I have literally had to tell Spirit to back off. I also receive clairvoyant information, smell, environmental detail, and occasional audible clairaudience — though hearing is comparatively rare for me.
I kept getting the same message from Spirit when I tried to read the way other mediums read: it's none of your business. You don't need the story. My mentor said it first. Then Spirit confirmed it. The sitter needs the story. I need enough to identify what Spirit is communicating — and that became a major part of learning how my mediumship actually works.
The Zip File — And The Essence Of A Person
Sometimes information arrives like a compressed packet — sensation, image, smell, and emotional tone almost simultaneously, collectively representing something much larger than what I individually received.
But I also receive the essence of a person. Who they were. How they felt to be around. Their energy, humor, their way of moving through the world. That can be just as identifying as a name or a date — sometimes more so. There is a difference between giving someone facts about a deceased person and giving them the feeling of that person. The second one tends to be the one that breaks people open.
I Had No Idea What It Meant
I was doing a reading over Zoom. I began receiving a sense of a younger woman — lighthearted, fun, carefree, happy-go-lucky in her energy. The kind of person who reminded me of myself, which is sometimes how Spirit shows me personality — through comparison to what I already know.
Then I saw an orange butterfly on my forearm. That was it. No context. No explanation. I had no idea what it meant.
I gave what I had: I'm receiving a younger woman, very lighthearted and carefree in her energy. And I'm seeing an orange butterfly on my forearm.
The woman gasped and started crying. Then she showed me an orange butterfly tattoo on her forearm.
Only after I gave the information did she explain the story. When her daughter died, around the time of her death, an orange butterfly had landed on that forearm. That experience had been significant enough that she later had it tattooed there.
My not knowing what it meant was part of what made it work. I gave it before she explained anything. I often do not remember readings in detail afterward — the information was not for me, it moved through me to get to the person it was meant for. Which is also why I learned to give what I receive as it comes rather than holding it while I try to make sense of it first.
I Almost Always Receive How Someone Died
By default I receive information connected to how someone died — physically, environmentally, what the circumstances felt like. I receive that information by default. If a sitter tells me upfront that they do not want manner-of-death information discussed, I do not relay it — but that does not necessarily mean I stop receiving it.
I do not always know the medical diagnosis. Heart attack and stroke can feel similar at the sensation level. So I describe what I am experiencing rather than announcing a medical chart I was never given. Describe the information. Do not inflate the interpretation.
The Worst Game Of Pictionary I Have Ever Played
Symbols are not universal. Spirit learns the medium's language — a symbol works because of what it means to that specific medium. And this is exactly where a medium can receive the correct information and still translate it wrong.
During training I was receiving information connected to a friend's grandmother. I was getting marijuana imagery — pot, edibles — along with a green medical symbol. Spirit was using imagery that made sense inside my own reference system: edibles gave me the concept of food, and the green medical symbol gave me medicine. The intended idea was food as medicine.
My mentor could see I essentially had it and kept telling me it was right there.
My brain was: I don't know. Your grandma used pot??
I finally gave the raw material. The correct meaning was that her grandmother used food as medicine. Spirit had given me the pieces. My literal brain just could not solve the rebus. 😂
This is why I learned to give the raw material — this is what I am being shown — instead of trying to assemble it into something polished first. If I give the image, the sitter can often recognize what it means before I can. The worry about saying something wrong does not go away. At least not for me. I still feel it every time. The difference is I give what I have anyway.
Sometimes The Symbol Never Gets Solved
There was a reading where I kept being shown international flags. The sitter did not know what they referred to. I kept asking Spirit to give it another way. I never got a usable answer.
To this day I do not know what the flags meant. That belongs in an honest account of evidential mediumship — you leave it unresolved instead of forcing a match.
Evidence Identifies. Message Is What They Came To Say.
"I love you" and "I'm proud of you" are not automatically weak mediumship. By themselves they are weak identifying evidence — they could apply to almost anyone.
But once the communicator has been established through specific evidence, those words are no longer functioning as evidence. They are the message. And at that point they can be the most powerful part of the entire reading.
Where Vedic Astrology Fits Into This
Spirit can give me the story in ridiculous detail — people, relationships, circumstances, what happened, sometimes things that have not happened yet — while being considerably less cooperative about the calendar.
That frustration with timing is a major reason I became interested in Vedic astrology. Jyotish gave me a technical timing structure I could interrogate separately from whatever I was receiving through mediumship. I keep track of what came from Spirit and what came from the chart — not blending them together and pretending one source produced information I actually got from the other.
